The Long Trail
The Long Trail in Vermont is an iconic hiking experience that offers both end-to-enders and day hikers an opportunity to explore the stunning landscapes and rugged terrains of the Green Mountain State. Stretching 273 miles from the Massachusetts border to the Canadian border, the Long Trail is the oldest long-distance hiking trail in the United States, built by the Green Mountain Club between 1910 and 1930. Whether planning a thru-hike known as an ‘End-to-Ender’ or just looking for a day trip, our Mad River Valley lodging is the perfect stopping-off point to experience the trail. Whichever way you experience this historic hike, the Long Trail promises adventure, breathtaking views, and a deep connection with nature.
The History and Significance of the Long Trail Vermont
The Long Trail Vermont symbolizes the state’s rich outdoor heritage. Conceived by James P. Taylor, the trail was designed to showcase the natural beauty of Vermont’s Green Mountains. Today, it continues to attract hikers worldwide who are eager to experience its challenging ascents, serene forests, and scenic vistas.
One of the Long Trail’s unique aspects is its intersection with the Appalachian Trail. For 100 miles, from the Massachusetts border to Maine Junction in Killington, the Long Trail and the Appalachian Trail share the same path. This convergence allows hikers to meet and interact with those embarking on one of the most famous long-distance hikes in the world.
Thru-Hiking the Long Trail Vermont
For those who are up for the ultimate challenge, thru-hiking the Long Trail Vermont is a test of endurance and perseverance. End-to-enders, as they are affectionately known, embark on a journey that typically takes 20 to 30 days to complete. The trail’s diverse terrain includes everything from dense forests and muddy paths to rocky summits and alpine meadows.
One of the highlights of the thru-hike is the sense of community among hikers. Along the way, you’ll encounter fellow adventurers, share stories, and form bonds that can last a lifetime. The Green Mountain Club provides valuable resources and support for thru-hikers, including detailed trail guides and maps and information on shelters and campsites.
For tech-savvy hikers, there is a hiking app called “FarOut” (formerly known as GutHooks). This app is very popular for hiking and is highly recommended as the most reliable navigational guide app for long-distance exploration.
Day Hiking on the Long Trail Vermont
If a multi-week thru-hike isn’t in the cards for you, don’t worry – the Long Trail Vermont offers plenty of opportunities for day hikes that allow you to experience its beauty without committing to the full distance. With numerous access points and trailheads, you can easily plan a day hike that fits your schedule and fitness level.
One popular day hiking segment is near Waitsfield. This area offers a variety of trails that cater to different skill levels, making it ideal for families, casual hikers, and seasoned adventurers alike. The proximity to Waitsfield also means exploring the charming town and enjoying local amenities before or after your hike.
Segment Three of the Long Trail is particularly noteworthy as it passes through the scenic area around Waitsfield. This section of the trail is known for its stunning views and diverse landscapes, making it a favorite among hikers. Whether you’re looking to tackle a challenging ascent or enjoy a leisurely walk in the woods, Segment Three has something for everyone.
For those planning to hike this section, our Mad River Valley lodging options offer the perfect base camp, including Mad River Lodge and The White Horse Lodge. Conveniently located near the trailhead, our properties provide comfortable accommodations and a range of amenities to ensure a relaxing stay. Both properties offer guests washing machines, private bathrooms with hot showers, and a community area for hikers to meet to discuss progress, share stories, and exchange hiking tips. For guests looking to have a safe place to deliver packages such as food supplies, new socks, or messages from home, we can store the packages until you arrive. Just contact our innkeeper ahead of time to let them know you want to send a package, and we are happy to hold it for you on your arrival. The post office in town does the same but some guests have found that packages go missing or are mislabeled and never show, so this is a safer option. This service ensures that you can enjoy a restful night without the hassle of carrying extra supplies.
With prior notice, we can also arrange to pick up hikers from the trailhead and bring them to our lodge.
