If a few years back you would have told any MRV local that the Village Square (AKA the Mehuron’s shopping center) would become one of the Valley’s culinary hotbeds you would have been written off as delusional. But times sure are a changin’ as a new wave of entrepreneurial investment in the shopping center that has turned it into a veritable “Rural Food Court”!
It all started out innocently enough when The Mad Taco led the charge. Joey Nagy and his team opened the “OG Taco” back in 2010. They set the bar and have become a wildly popular eatery among locals, visitors and Long Trail thru-hikers. It’s true, word has spread among the hiking community that “the taco” and Waitsfield generally is a must stop place to re-fuel when hiking the length of VT.
Then in the spring of 2016 Charlie Menard founded the Canteen Creemee Company serving up the highest-end snack bar food and the most decadent creemees in all of Vermont. Since inception CCC has earned high praise in the press and among their ardent fans. Heck they even ranked as one of the top 10 iconic ice cream shops in all of New England by the Boston Globe.
When Pizza Soul moved downtown after 10 years in Sugarbush Village it really rounded out the offerings of the evolving “Rural Food Court”. Jason Lerner and his team serve up classic, New York-style pizza, stromboli and calzones that remind NYC area transplants of their former home.
Things started to really heat up recently when Emily’s Bar and Bistro opened up with a full service bar offering comfort food, fun and fond memory making!
Mehuron’s Supermarket, the Village Square’s long-time anchor has gotten into the food trend in their own way with the recent revamping of their deli. Chef Patrick and his crew create an amazing hot bar, sandwiches and grab-and-go options that have proven to be a perfect addition to the Village Square’s food court.
“It’s probably the tastiest parking lot in Vermont,” says local resident, Joey Tynan. So when it’s time to eat everyone can get what they want; tasty tacos, pizza, fried chicken, burgers, creative sandwiches, a healthy salad or an ever-changing variety of daily specials and, of course, a famous Vermont creemee for dessert! Come on down to the place where it is hip to be square, Village Square that is!
