Want to take my daughter there this year to learn how to ski!
Last year was the most remarkable November riding yet. Now please, please make vista available on opening day. If I have to volunteer to help put up pads on all the lift towers the week before, I will happily come work for Bolton again, this time as a pass holder!
On behalf of Mad River Glen, thank you and congratulations to Win Smith and his team at Sugarbush Resort for everything they have done for Sugarbush, the Mad River Valley and the Vermont ski industry over nearly 20 years of ownership. It has been a pleasure and honor to work alongside you to make the Mad River Valley the best ski and outdoor adventure destination in New England. While Mad River Glen will forever continue to be independent and the nation’s only cooperatively owned ski area, we look forward to working with you and the new ownership group in the future. See you on the hill!
"Sugarbush president and owner Win Smith said that he’d turned down several offers to sell Sugarbush over the years and took pride in being independently owned and operated. However, recent events in the ski industry and the challenge of rising costs posed both by climate change and by doing business in Vermont have convinced him that a new owner was needed to ensure a sustainable future for Sugarbush."
I am proud to be a MRG Shareholder. I have to say I find this sad and kind of scary.
Had the pleasure of skiing both of you last year and it really was a complimentary experience and I can't wait to go back to both!
MRG is great but variety is the spice of life. Ski Everywhere!
Since I was young and I have lived in Waitsfield and Warren, worked at Sugarbush, Mad River has always been the best. A ski area for real skiers. 😂
I’ve only skied Mad River once, for the love of skiing. You better have the skills to ski dust on frozen waterfalls, because that’s true skiing. God bless the efforts of the coop.
Sugarbush goes Aspen East?
Stay the course Mad River Glen, you shall be blessed by the SKI Gods!
Classy post by the good folks at Mad River Glen. We are all still part of the MRV community.
Sugarbush family and friends, we have some BIG news to share. Today we are excited to announce that we’ve agreed to sell Sugarbush Resort to Alterra Mountain Company. We do this knowing that Alterra will continue to maintain our culture, values and commitment to our community, while bringing additional capital and other resources to make Sugarbush even better in the years ahead.
Win, you’re the best. Glad you’re sticking around for a little while. You have to do what’s best for you and your family, and my family and I wish you well, but you will be sorely missed. Please know that. ❤️ 😢
I am optimistically hopeful that this will be a positive change. I hope that it's an opportunity to make Sugarbush more of a year-round destination. Local businesses and restaurants have a hard time surviving offseason. It's hard watching our favorite restaurants close year after year. Thank you, Win for an amazing ride and a job well done. Please don't let them close the Wunderbar! 😉
While I have always been proud that Sugarbush has been independently owned, I trust your decision and your reasons and look forward to welcoming the Altera Mountain company. As long as they continue to improve Sugarbush, but keep the current field, this will be a good move.
Thank you for making Sugarbush what it is today, Win! Us diehard Sugarbush skiers will be forever indebted to you!
Great job Win! Wishing you and your properties the best of luck!
Great letter. Congrats , and good luck!
Another decade on the horizon with yet another owner. SOOOOOOO glad to hear Win Smith is staying onboard, he has made a hugh contribution to the community, thank you Win for your service!
Painted ski towers there this past summer, attended the 4th of July in sugarbush. Amazing community, one of my favorite places to be, highly recommend a visit if you haven’t been there yet! #BeBetterHere
Happy for Win. Even though it's 5.5 hours away, I consider Sugarbush Resort to be my home mountain. Fingers crossed that with the team still in place, the changes will be positive. Just don't go putting a HSQ on Castlerock. 😜
Win, I expect this was a difficult decision for you. I wish you the best during this next phase.
love Sugarbush !
best thing I've ever done with my kids and grandchildren
Good luck to you WIN....SB is an awesome mountain
Good luck Win. Thanks for your leadership
I will always love sugarbush resort that comes from someone local #BeBetterHere I just hope that mentally carrys on. See you soo!!! is been a great start! Much love to everyone!
In Win we trust!
One of the big reasons I love Sugarbush so much is because they were Vermont-owned. I understand the sale and Win's reasoning but this is extremely sad. The ski industry is consolidating into only a small handful of megacorps and it's depressing to watch.
We ski here because of what you have done for Sugarbush Win . We ❤️ this mountain! You care and that’s the difference. Your work and dedication to Sugarbush shows on every lift , trail and restaurant you will be missed . Thank you for your dedication. We have skied here since the 80’s . Good luck and thanks 😘!
Am afraid, but trust Win.
This is both a happy and sad day!
Happy as I agree that Alterra will pump the resources in to make it even better here, to steal the tag line. Also, as an IKON pass holder, I’ve been slightly saddened that last year and this year will be limited to 7 Sugarbush days. My expectation is that 2020-21 would be unlimited. This will be the best of both worlds, as I can ski unlimited at my favorite mountain (no, not you, Stratton 🙄) and take adavantage of the amazing destinations on IKON!
It’s still sad from the standpoint that gone are the days of the locally owned-and-operated mountains, but I’ll get over that when I buy IKON next year ... Keep fighting the good fight, though, MRG! ⛷☃️👍
Thank you to Win for everything he did to make this mountain so great, and congratulations to the entire Sugarbush team on being recognized as such a valuable asset in the ski community! It truly is better here!
One of my favorite resorts that I can't get to as often as I want, but I will be there this year. I thought this might happen, but that it would be a few years away... I think the additional capital, will be good, as there are upgrades here and there that would be good, but as others have said, I hope they don't destroy the vibe - but I think Alterra's record on that is pretty good....
I was pretty shocked when I first heard about this early this afternoon. My family and I (NJ)&(MD) having been going to Sugarbush for the last 15 years a few times each winter. It is Pure Vermont! Win has done a wonderful job keeping the vibe so real with no commercialism. With Win continuing to run SB, I hope it doesn't change. Sugarbush and the MRV is a Magical Place! Best of luck Win, hope to see you on the hill this season.
Very sad day. How long before a Walmart buys the Warren Store. I have always loved the Bush (and promoted it to
my friends) because it IS Vermont- now it is WAS Vermont😡
Win - you’re the best and Sugarbush has become our home away from home under your leadership and direction. Can’t imagine the difficulty of this decision but know you did what was right for the mountain and the community you have loved for so many decades. Loved the past, looking forward to the future and thrilled you and your family will still be around. Can’t wait for the season to start in a couple of weeks!
😐 how will this affect those of us that own property on the mountain........ I really hope this is a change for the better.....
One of the last great independents
Skiing is all about big business and especially true for the western conglomerates. Really sad day for those of us who chose Sugarbush for a reason, and it wasn't for the ability to use a pass to ski all over the world
