Join this Off-road Adventure from New York to the Canadian border

The Northeast Backcountry Discovery Route (NEBDR) is a thrilling off road motorcycle or 4×4 trail that spans 1,300 miles through the scenic backcountry of the Northeastern United States. Riders travel through upstate New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine as they traverse all the way north to the Canadian border. Broken out into multiple sections of around 100-150 miles each, the ride can take some time, depending on your speed and how many stops you make.

If you are short on time, it can be done in a long weekend, but we suggest you spend a little more time meandering along the route and visiting the small towns and historic points along the way. As you travel along the trail, you’ll encounter rugged terrains, charming small towns, and breathtaking landscapes.

One of the most enchanting segments of the NEBDR winds through the state of Vermont, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and delightful stops. The Warren Lodge, our Vermont lodging is close to the trail and is a favorite stop along the route for many riders.

We highly recommend purchasing a Northeast Backcountry Discovery Route map as part of the trail will have very limited cell phone coverage for GPS. This trail winds through seven states, following dirt and gravel roads with seasonal challenges. The printed map will guide you along the way and is waterproof, tear-resistant, and comes with a DVD documentary providing an in-depth look at the first expedition of the NEBDR.

Be sure to check the Ridebrd website for any alerts or updates for closures or restrictions along the route. The flooding in Vermont in 2023 caused some areas to be washed out, so it’s essential to have the most up-to-date information and rerouting suggestions before heading out.

The Allure of the NEBDR

The NEBDR is designed to offer an exhilarating experience for both seasoned adventurers and those new to off-roading.

One of the highlights of the NEBDR is its accessibility. Whether you’re embarking on a multi-day expedition or a shorter segment of the route, the NEBDR offers flexibility to suit different schedules and skill levels. The route is meticulously mapped out, ensuring that travelers can navigate the backcountry with confidence.

Starting in New York

The journey typically begins near Hancock, New York. As you head north, the landscape quickly transitions from suburban settings to remote wilderness. The first day is an introduction to the diverse terrain that defines the NEBDR, including gravel roads, forest trails, and scenic byways. The ride offers a mix of technical sections and smoother paths, catering to different levels of expertise.

Traversing through Vermont

As you cross into Vermont, the scenery becomes even more enchanting. Verdant forests, charming farmsteads, and quaint villages punctuate the journey. The route takes you through the Green Mountains, providing ample opportunities for breathtaking photos and serene moments in nature. One of the highlights of this leg is the opportunity to visit local landmarks and historical sites, adding a cultural dimension to the adventure.
